... Mathilde Hirth's masters project culminating the Masters in Fine Arts degree. It is performative and intra-active exploration of what becomes through moving with paper and fabric. How can moving with and through more-than-human matter open up the potentialities and possibilities of movement? As well, challenge our understanding of ‘a body’ and what becomes a moving body?
The title of the thesis is Moving through Matter: An intra-active exploration of movement and the moving body through paper and fabric.
The masters thesis and performance received grade A.
"Through the theoretical frameworks of agential realism and affect theory, understood through Karen Barad and Brian Massumi, it asks for an intra-active, performative and affective approach to moving. How moving is always already becoming through the specific entanglements and affective intensities of the intra-active phenomena. It is a hopeful study, one that dwells in the unknown and argues for a materialisation that never sits still, but becomes continuously reconfigured and different. The artistic research works through a performative research paradigm and is explored through improvisation and propositions. As well, influenced by the Japanese art form, Butoh, with a special focus on total presence and moving through movement images."

We rise up through a tumble of pressure. Muscles tensing, veins squeezing, cells pinching the insides of my arm. It tingles, tickles, vibrates through my skeleton. Scraping at my insides, gnawing. I have ants running through my bones, working, finding shelter, building and jumping. They run and I shake. Shake uncontrollably as the paper presses against my arm. My chest tightens, my legs are like jelly. Every inch and fibre weaved through paper scrapes the surface of my skin.

Choose one specific part of the material, a quality, an interesting sensation, an observation, a change, something that stood out to you. Explore this ‘something happening’ through movement. Explore how the sensation grows through your body.
